Getting closer...

Bubba's getting closer to crawling. He's starting to get up on all fours and rock till he falls over. I don't know how I feel about this. My baby...isn't so baby anymore. Today is his 9 month birthday.

Happy 9 month Birthday Bubba

A Thanksgiving make-over.

The daughter decided she wanted to have "curly" hair for Thanksgiving. So we went curler crazy...

She slept in them all night, and this was what we got...

Not bad, hey??

Thanksgiving preparation

This morning the daughter and I got started on our Thanksgiving preparations...

We baked pumpkin pies...

We made Cranberry "Crap" for Grandpa H.

The history behind Cranberry "Crap" is that my dad is the only person who likes and will eat this creation...yet somehow it is a family tradition. Ever since my mom passed away it has become my honor to make this for my dad. I'm also the one who dubbed it Cranberry "Crap". In case you want to make it and repel your family here is the recipe. Beware though because every year I screw it up...I either forget the sugar, or let the jello set too long, or I don't grind the cranberries enough...so it will be interesting to find out how I flubbed up this year...

Cranberry Crap

2 cups fresh cranberries
1 small box of lemon Jello
1 orange
1 cup of sugar

Boil one cup of water. Add the lemon Jello and stir until dissolved. Then add 1/2 cup cold water. Put Jello in the fridge and check it frequently. When it begins to set it is time to mix in the cranberry mixture.

Using a food processor or blender put the 2 cups of cranberries in. I usually finely grate the peel off the orange and save it. Cut up the remaining orange and add to the cranberries. Add the peel you grated off. Blenderize it to a mushy pulp. Mix in the 1 cup of sugar.

When the Jello is ready, mix in this mixture. Allow to set at least a few hours if not overnight.

Voila! Cranberry Crap!!

Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Dressing up

On Sunday, The Daughter decided I couldn't help her get dressed. She went upstairs and was gone for quite awhile. When she returned she modeled her outfit choice for me.

It was a daring choice...

Especially since it was around 40 degrees out, the shorts are her brothers, and the shirt fit her last year.

She looks smashing!

Bubba is starting to move away from baby food. Tonight he ate a half of a banana cut up. This is what he thought of the "new" food.

This picture made me laugh...

Hope you all are having a fantastic week!

I'm neglecting my blog!

Hi everyone -- so sorry I haven't posted anything on here lately. Things have been quite busy with various school functions, work (yes I'm actually getting to work! YAY!) and laundry. I don't know how the 5 of us create so much laundry!

I'll be posting some newer pics soon...just of the kids and such.

In the meantime I hope everyone has a great weekend. We don't have much planned, but that's a-ok!

Later!

Needed to be said

I usually try to keep my blog light-hearted and fun, but for some reason I've felt compelled to write about my mom. I don't know what it is, but thoughts about the day she left this world for the great expanse of heaven is weighing heavily on my mind lately. I don't know a lot about grief, but I know I must write this down for reasons I don't yet know. Maybe someone who reads this is in the midst of losing someone they love, or maybe they recently did. All I know is that no two people grieve the same. If I can get to the end of my story I will try to share with you some of the lighter moments when my humor helped me through the darkness. Here is my story -- feel free to read it or feel free to skip it. I just had to write it...
________________________________________________________

If there is anything I wish I could write about it would be my mom's death. Doesn't that sound morbid? What I mean is that I feel that day forever changed my life. I wasn't a child or a mother yet, but I was somewhere in-between. 23 years old and the whole world ahead of me. So here is my story, or the story of the darkest day I've had yet to endure.

It was the man and my first Valentine's Day. We had started dating in August. We didn't have any concrete plans, just that I would come home and sleep since I was working nights at the police department and we would catch up later. I remember coming home and my mom was on the phone with my aunt. She was pretty housebound around then because she had broken her ankle a month prior walking outside to shovel the driveway. She hated having to use a walker or crutches in public and chose to stay home and work on her knitting.

She told my aunt that I was home and they started teasing me and asking if the man was going to give me a ring for Valentine’s Day. I remember rolling my eyes and sauntering off to bed. I woke a few hours later and decided to get ready for my hot Valentine's Day date. My mom was watching her secret sin -- her soap operas -- in the living room. My dad wasn't home as he was helping someone move. I got ready and called the man. We decided to meet up at the fire station where he was a volunteer. As I left I asked my mom if there was anything she needed. She requested a Diet Rite with a straw in it. I got it for her and told her I was leaving. She said goodbye and that she loved me and to have a good time. I told her, "I love you too". Needless to say that was the last time I ever spoke to my mom again. A few hours later I received word that she had passed away at home with my aunt and the paramedics there with her.

I thought I would be able to go into more detail, but right now my heart is beating too quickly and my eyes are prickling with tears. I don't want to cry in front of my kids who are playing legos in the living room. I can't believe after almost 10 years it still causes such a visceral reaction in me. I try my hardest not to play the "what if" game. What if I hadn't left, but chose to stay home and hang out with her. What if my dad had been home that day? What if she hadn't gone outside to shovel that cold January morning and slipped and broke her ankle. What if....

I know as adults we are almost assured that we will witness the demise of our parents. We will watch them grow older and frailer. We will witness their metamorphosis from middle-age into elderly. We will see their hair grow thinner or grayer. We will see them move from complete independence into a needier roll. None of these things are easy, but there is always the time element to it. It usually doesn't happen overnight and we can have time to prepare.

I don't blame anyone for my mom not being here, mostly because when I play the "what if" game I have to remind myself my mom already had quite a few challenges. She had been diagnosed with Lupus and was on medication for that. She also was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis in her hands, which limited her from doing the crafts she so loved. Who knows what her life would be like right now. She may have more pain or be on more medications, coping with their nasty side effects. She may have had to face other illnesses that would have caused her pain or suffering.

While I miss her on a daily basis I can rejoice in the fact that I knew this wonderful woman, and that she CHOSE me to be a part of her life. To teach me what is right or wrong, to hold my hand when I was hurt or sad, and to lift me up when I was happy.

Every day that I am alive I am honoring this woman who gave so much of herself to everyone and asked for so little in return.

Bubba goes to the Urgent Care

So last night Bubba was just miserable. No fever, but obviously in pain. We figured ear infection. So I found an urgent care that actually had hours past 5PM on a Saturday and off we went. Lo-and-behold he has his very first ear infection. So now he is taking grape-bubble gum flavor enhanced Zithromax. Such a little trooper!

We are all so close...

...close UP that is!!

Then and now...

Today I came across the hat Bubba wore in the hospital when he was born. Because we had two of them I decided to see how he looks in it...

AND

NOW

Nothing to report

Wow, things have been a bit quiet around here. The kids are all doing okay - though Bubba decided another cold is in order so there have been a few sleepless nights for him and I. I don't mind though. The cuddling is stellar!

Jo-Jo is doing well at hockey. This is his first season. He is skating so well and starting to really get some of his skills down.

The daughter is done with dance until January, but I found out that she will be in a recital in June. I'm so excited!!

Dad has been on vacation for the past week and a half. You would think we would have done something fun, but between his work schedules at his other jobs and my adding more days since he was home we just didn't get a lot done. We did get to have two date nights which were comprised of us sitting on our cozy overstuffed couch watching intellectually stimulating movies like 'The Strangers' and 'Baby Mama'. Neither movie would I highly recommend either.

Otherwise I've been dreaming about all the work I want to do on K-House -- our wonderful home. Thanks to a doggy with bladder control problems, I've decided to do away with living room carpet and match the laminate that is in our bonus room (aka Bubba's bedroom) and hallway. I've also tried to single handedly bring the economy back to normal by buying not only the beautiful kitchen set seen in my other post, but also two new end tables, a new coffee table, a new TV console, new shelving for our stereo AND three new lamps. Whew. Guess Christmas came early for me this year.

So in a nutshell (okay -- this post is already WAY too long to be a nutshell post) this weekend was spent smoochin' on Bubba and wiping his nose, cheering for Jo-Jo at practice, and singing silly songs with The Daughter. In other words...it was absolutely perfect.

A new table for me!

I finally got a new kitchen table, chairs and a bench!! I've had my current table for 10 yrs now and it is not expandable. We started with 4 chairs and then one broke so we had 3. I'm so excited! Now I can have people over for the holidays and not have to have the seperate card table thanks to my new table having and extending leaf. It is so funny how the simplest things make me VERY happy!

Below is my review of my new table that is posted on the World Market's website. I really do recommend their furniture! I'm also going back to buy a new coffee table, end tables and lamps. Now if I could just get the husband to paint...............................

As if any of us could forget

Just get out there and do your thing :)

AND THE WINNER IS...

JO-JO!!

That's right! This past Friday at the Admirals game he WON the costume contest! I wasn't there as I had The Daughter and Bubba duty, but this is the story I got from dad...

When they walked into the Bradley Center someone approached them and asked if Jo-Jo wanted to be in the contest. He replied 'yes' and dad signed him up. They were told where to report and when.

At the given time, dad and Jo-Jo headed off to the meeting area. When it was time to go on the ice Jo-Jo had to forge ahead alone. A nice couple who were also in the contest offered to help him out if he fell on the ice. The people in the contest stood in a circle and Roscoe, the teams mascot, skated around and picked 3 finalists. Jo-Jo was one of those 3. Then each of the 3 had to dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller song on the ice in front of the Bradley Center crowd. When they were done the people in the crowd picked the winner. According to Dad, the stadium ROCKED when they pointed to Jo-Jo.

Win or lose I am just so PROUD of my little man. At the ripe age of 32 there is no way you would get me on the ice in front of thousands of people and make me dance to the Thriller song. He is so brave.

I'm one proud mama...
